A route through old Madrid
In this route of “The Madrid of the Hapsburgs“, we will go through the political epicentre of the time and we will enter the Plaza de la Villa, where the old Town Hall of Madrid was located. We will talk about Don Álvaro de Bazán and the architecture of the important buildings that surround the square.
Although it must also be said that, during the final stage of this monarchy, the ‘Golden Age’ of the arts and letterswas livedin our country, which is reflected in its monuments, streets and squares.
Guided tour of ‘Madrid de los Austrias’
In the Hapsburg quarter, we will head towards the Calle Mayor through its winding streets up to the Plaza Mayor, where we will have a brief explanation about its construction, and you will discover the Hapsburg monarchy (who ruled between the 16th and 17th centuries), their customs, costumes, celebrations and festivities (in the typical ‘corrales de comedias’), we will talk about the trade of the time of the House of Habsburg and, why not, about the dreaded Holy Inquisition.
Our guided tour will continue in the Puerta del Sol, where you will know “los mentideros” (in the old Church of Buen Suceso) or “las 12 campanadas” (themost famous12 chimes), the most famous clock seen every year-end, (one grape one chime), … a tradition that has a curious history behind it, shall we tell you about it?
