Visit with us the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales to, after the 70 minutes of stay, carry out one of the most popular visits; the guided visit to the Madrid of the Austrias, the perfect continuation to the narration started in the Descalzas.
The Descalzas Reales
Inside the Descalzas Reales you can admire the monastery founded by Juana de Austria, (where she was born and spent her entire life and where her tomb now lies).
The building itself is a museum, decorated with frescoes on its imposing main staircase), beautifully decorated chapels, presided over by the recumbent Christ (Gaspar Becerra), which is carried in procession every Good Friday.
During the guided tour we can enjoy the tapestries (commissioned in the 17th century by the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia), according to Rubens’ instructions.
Our official guide will take you to “el candilón”, a special room presided over by a large candelabra (hence the name of the room), where the nuns kept vigil over their deceased companions.
The room contains a large number of works of art from the 16th/17th centuries, including Spanish, Flemish and Italian canvases of incalculable artistic value.
Madrid of the Austrias
You will head towards Puerta del Sol, for an essential walk in the city, remarkable for the stories we will tell you and interesting for the historic buildings we will see along the way.
We will then gradually make our way through Calle Postas towards the Plaza Mayor where we will talk about the customs of the Habsburg period, the festivities, celebrations and comedy plays that took place there, the clothes they wore, the Spanish Inquisition and the Autos de Fe, the commerce of the time…
You will learn about convent life in the 17th century at the Convent of Las Carboneras, and we will visit the most important political epicentre of the time, the Plaza de la Villa.
During the tour you will admire a beautiful panoramic view of The Cathedral and the Palacio Real and the tour will end in the Plaza de Isabel II, commenting on the Spanish Golden Century with the most important writers such as Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Luis de Góngora or Calderón de la Barca.
The tour will make you feel and live in a different way a Madrid of the past that has left us a great legacy. Come and get to know it!
The full tour will last approximately 2 hours accompanied at all times by an official guide and with audio system to hear the explanations well.
