In this school trip we tell you how Madrid, as the capital of the country, was a key place in the development of Realism. The city represented the complexity of Spanish society at the time: a space full of contrasts between the upper and lower classes, between modernity and tradition, which inspired many of the literary works of the time.
In addition, Madrid was a centre of cultural activities. Literary cafés, such as the Café de Fornos, were meeting points for writers, artists and politicians, which encouraged the exchange of ideas and literary creation. In this environment, realist authors were able to observe urban life at close quarters, which became a recurring theme in their writings.
Writers such as Galdós, Clarín and Pardo Bazán were the main exponents of this movement, whose works continue to be fundamental for understanding Spanish history and society during this period.
